Eight

After a long day, Sophia’s feet were killing her. All she wanted to do was walk into her apartment, kick off her heels, toss off her clothes and get into a hot bath. Instead, she unlocked the door to her apartment, kicked off her heels by the door with a moan, and then almost had a heart attack when she looked up.

Sophia and Darius were leaders of the Vegas covenant, and while Darius was the ultimate decider of Covenant matters, Sophia ran the business side and supported her brother in all the ways she could. Right now she wanted to curse him for ever hiring Zeke to run tech.

With a growl, she tossed a threatening look at her uninvited guest. She let down her long black hair from its tight bun and glared at him. “You’re supposed to send me a warning when you set up shop in here. I know there are a lot of upgrades happening, but for fuck’s sake, Zeke.”

Sophia was a tall, beautiful woman with dusky skin, brown eyes that often were more dangerous than inviting. She had long, endless legs that went with her lean figure, but her attitude scared off most admirers and anyone who might be a friend.

“Sorry, it’s protocol to start with your rooms and your brother’s when upgrading equipment. Also, in my defense, your schedule has you meeting with one of your warehouse managers on the east side in ten minutes, so unless you’re getting piggyback rides from Casey these days, you’re the one deviating from a schedule here.” Zeke was already on the tall side, but being up on top of a fifteen foot ladder in the middle of her living room with vaulted ceilings only exaggerated that fact.

As usual, the man was in a simple, sleeveless gym shirt and a pair of basketball shorts, as casual as it was possible to be while remaining at least halfway decent. His spiked blond hair was hidden from her by way of his head being halfway inside her ceiling to work on her electronics. “A pair of Hunters got within spitting distance of a couple of our people at the Bellagio, which means it’s time to change all the cameras and randomize all the locks again.”

The defense of her change in plans died in her throat before she could start talking, since surprise won out at the notification of a new threat. “Darius didn’t contact me. Is he not concerned or just slacking?” Sophia decided to detour into her kitchen and set down her bag on the table before she took out her devices so that Zeke could boost her security. She ran a hand through her hair as she headed for a bottle of wine next. News of Hunters meant her night was going to get even longer.

“Maybe your brother decided to take a vacation. For the first time in…how many thousand years? Don’t answer that.” He jumped down from the ladder, looking as though he hit a few invisible bounces on the way down to stall his momentum before he landed on his feet and went to her phone.
